Squinting at my computer monitor like it would somehow enhance the image in front of me, I used the wireless mouse to pan the screen a little farther to the right. The fisheye lens of the neighbor’s security camera captured a larger image than my screen could display. The sun had gone down a couple hours earlier, and the Osbornes’ motion sensor light only lit up a section of the front porch and part of their front walk.

Shoulders hunched, Cyrus took one last drag off his cigarette before depositing the stub in an ash tray. He spared one last glance at the neighborhood before pulling open the front door and disappearing from view. Stray snowflakes whipped in front of the lens, reminding me how glad I was to be warm and comfortable inside my apartment’s home office.

I’d assumed—wrongly, as I’d recently learned—that Cyrus Osborne was one of those bougie types who’d have security cameras set up every three feet as part of his home’s security system. Hell, I’d cracked open his household’s wireless network like a can of soda. Shouldn’t the rest of it be just as easy?

The answer to that question was a resounding “no.”

With Carla Graham and her family, I’d been able to tap into the home’s computers to monitor their movements inside the house. It had helped ensure I was prepared and thorough when the day finally came for Carla to meet her fate.

The Osbornes, on the other hand, didn’t have a single connected webcam in their entire house. I was familiar with the company that produced their home’s alarm system, but even that wasn’t connected to a camera.

I had no eyes on the interior of their house, and I’d been forced to settle for the next best thing—the neighbor’s outdoor security camera. At the very least, this allowed me to monitor the family’s comings and goings without physically being present in the area.

After standing in line behind Cyrus, his wife, Mabel, and their daughter, Julie, at the grocery store earlier in the day, I had a better understanding of their current family dynamic, as well as their opinions of their plans for the next few days. Julie wasn’t thrilled about being relegated to spending New Year’s Eve with her parents, but she’d broken her curfew for two nights in a row and had been grounded for a week.

Maybe the knowledge of Julie’s tendency to stay out with her friends too late didn’t seem pertinent, but every little piece of information was valuable to me.

If I hadn’t overheard the dialogue in the store this afternoon, I might have been inclined to think Julie was out with a friend. I could have the time of my life with her parents, kill them, and wind up with a witness to the whole damn thing.

Just like I’d done with Kate Denson.

The embers of anger burned to life in my chest.

How could I have been so careless? So sloppy? Kate had been in the damn house, and I didn’t even notice.
